Chichester athletes savour best National Junior League start

Chichester's under-20 team gave a good account of themselves in the first National Junior League match of the season to finish in a close third place in a hard-fought match.

Lying second behind eventual winners Brighton & Hove for most of the match, it was only in the final event, the men’s steeplechase, that Southampton managed to overturn a nine-point deficit to snatch the runners-up spot by a mere six points after four hours of competition and 38 events.

All teams deserved credit for their performances in some of the worst conditions ever seen at Portsmouth with sprinters battling into a strong headwind and jumpers and throwers having to adjust their approaches in the gale-force wind and rain.
