Michael Jones said with the main station empty, a temporary building has been set up in the grounds immediately outside, and promised to urge Sussex Police to undertake a review with a view to re-opening the closed station.
Mr Jones, who is a West Sussex county and Crawley borough councillor, stood as Labour’s parliamentary candidate in the 2010 general election in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Labour councillor Tony Squires added: “I’ve known Michael since he was a young lad and in my judgement there is no-one better qualified with his legal knowledge, council experience of working with the police and commitment to fighting these police cuts.
“We’ve got to get the police station re-opened, it’s all wrong that it’s shut.”
The other candidates are Conservative Katy Bourne, James Doyle from the Green Party, UKIP’s Patrick Lowe, and Lib Dem James Walsh.
