This battle which was fought in Sussex in 1066 had a great effect on our county.
The Normans had a huge advantage over the Saxons.
They had 10,000 men against the Saxons’ 7,000.
Three thousand was a great advantage for the Normans. They were in Sussex for some three weeks before the Saxon army arrived.

They were also very cruel to the Sussex people.
In contrast, the Saxons had it very tough. they had a big battle to fight at Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire which cost them dearlyand they could have easily lost.
they then as quickly as possible had to march 250 miles to confront William. Unfortunately he was successful and ruled our kingdom.
Just over 100 yaers ago our county was described as still being ‘Saxon’.
