Derrick Chester said he was ‘mystified’ by the decision, which would help to stop congestion at a level crossing on the A284 towards Wick. The bypass will also make it easier for the traffic flow from the North Littlehampton housing development, which will include 1,260 new homes, a 100 bed hotel, a 60 bed care home, a new school and community centre, Derrick said: “While welcoming the fact the county council does take consultation comments seriously, delays to the new bypass are very concerning. “The North Littlehampton development, which will generate thousands of extra car journeys a day, proceeds at pace and it is crucial the new road is in place as there is no way the existing highway network will cope. “When I saw it was delayed I was mystified, and also concerned. We need the new road to be able to cope with the development, or Littlehampton will be strangled by the highways network.” The bypass will form the northern section of a new road route from just south of the A27 at Crossbush to East Street in Littlehampton town centre, and will connect Lyminster village to Toddington Nurseries to the south. The county council claim it will enhance the link between Littlehampton and the A27, and will also provide the road capacity for 700 new jobs at the Toddington development site. There will also be improved access to Bognor Regis and Worthing. A spokesman for the county council said: “We have secured £3 million from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership towards funding the scheme. “A formal funding agreement has been signed. “We have also procured a design and build contractor to help us deliver the scheme over the next two years. Some issues were raised during consultations on the planning application, which we have listened to. “As a result, we have withdrawn our original application and will submit a new one once these views have been fully reviewed.” Don’t miss out on all the latest breaking news where you live.
